From March 31 to April 1, 2014, the Shanghai International Workshop of ISGAN’s “The 3rd China Smart Grid Industry Development Seminar” was held in Shanghai, China. Leaders and experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Energy Administration, State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid, other related fields from both domestic and abroad and also Energy officials from ISGAN’s 25 member-countries exchanged the newest deliverables and developing directions of smart power grid.

Also during the seminar, Deputy Director of National Energy Administration Energy Savings and S&T Equipment Binglin Xiu, Professor Wenjun Zhang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chair of ISGAN Executive Committee Michele de Nigris gave individual speeches. Professor Xiu stated that NEA would strongly support the construction and development of State Energy Smart Grid R&D Center (Shanghai), and incidentally choose it as a pioneer center for developing new concepts and new technology for China’s smart power grid.

Professor Zhang, on the other hand, pointed out that State Energy Smart Grid R&D Center (Shanghai) has gained a few success in the combination of industry, education and research since its’ establishment which made vital contributions to the development of national smart grid and especially on the areas of new-grid energy, smart electricity, smart power equipment, communication and information, electric power security, dispatch, second-generation high-temperature superconductor, and the like. He hopes that the Shanghai Center would continue to operate with high-efficiency and take the lead in this endeavor. Overall, the seminar was a highly recognized undertaking with high-level standards that has had great impact as an international smart grid event which then contributes to the general significance of China’s smart grid development.

Mr. Michele de Nigris also introduced ISGAN’s platform to advance the development and deployment of international smart grids which was once just an idea but has now turned into reality. Since joining ISGAN in 2012, China positively undertook and participated in ISGAN’s programs with its own dedication. In addition, he expressed his great gratitude to the Shanghai Center for hosting the seminar and shared his prospects for jointly promoting the smart power grid construction by enhancing further international cooperation.

State Energy Smart Grid R&D Center (Shanghai) has also invited Professor Qiang Lu from Qsinghua University, Committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of China Democratic League, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, foreign academician of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering as well as Professor Yusheng Xue, academician of Institute of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Honorary President of State Grid Electric Power Research Institute. Both guests of honor gave academic speeches on smarter grids and the reliability of smart grids under the context of energy. Afterwards, Deputy Chief Engineer Yimin Wang from the State Grid Corporation of China, Deputy Chief Engineer Xuzhu Dong from China Southern Grid Electric Power Research Institute, and Vice President Dr. Stephan Lelaidier from Alstom Research and Development individually introduced the practices and effects in the smart grid fields.

In recent years, with the booming development of renewable energy and distributed generation, inevitable trend on power grids have become more advanced, efficient and cleaner. The Shanghai Center should seize the historical opportunities and cooperate closely with counterparts and join hands to create a new image for the development of smart grids.
